What's the difference between Proscar and Propecia?

In a nutshell nothing but price. Both Proscar and Propecia are brand names of a Finasteride based tablet. Proscar comes in a 5mg tablet and is cut in to either two or four and Propecia is a 1mg tablet. Both are effective for hair loss.

What causes Male Pattern Hair Loss?

Male Pattern Hair Loss is caused when men have high levels of the naturally occurring hormone DHT. This hormone causes a slowdown in the hair growth cycle causing pattern hair loss.

How does Propecia work?

Propecia works by blocking the enzyme 5 Alpha Reductase. This in turn reduces the levels of DHT produced by the body allowing the hair to revert to its original growth cycle stopping further hair loss and often resulting in new hair growth.

Is it effective?

Clinical trials conducted have shown that 83% of men who took Proscar/Propecia reported no further hair loss while 63% showed an increase in new hair growth.

How often do I need to take it?

Your doctor will prescribe the amount of Proscar/Propecia to be taken daily. The drug needs to be taken for three to six months before you notice a difference. It should also be noted that if you stop taking Finasteride you should expect to experience pattern hair loss again.
